As the phone goes bigger, the applications go better and the battery life goes lesser. Almost all the smartphone users are complaining that their battery does not last longer than 18 to 24 hours. The reason for the battery life getting less is that before a decade we did not witness the touch phones and the phone with keypad had smaller display space and needed only less battery to keep it powered. But now almost 3 to 5 inch long touch screen has to be powered and the phone has to support multi tasking and superior graphics. Here are few proven tips to increase the battery life of your phone upto 33%.

0. Know the type of your battery. There are lot of batteries for phone such as Lithium Ion and Nickel. From the user manual find out which type of battery is used for your phone so that you can protect your battery accordingly.

1. Intialize the battery of new phone. This is a trick that most of us do not know. When you buy a new phone, the battery is not actually chemically activated. Since the phone is going to be packed for a long time (3 – 6 months) before you get it from the store and start using it, there is a chance that battery life may decay. For this reason, mobile phone manufacturers keep the battery inactivated inside the pack. To initialize the chemical reaction fully, you need to boost charge your phone when you charge it for the first time. This is very important for a good and long battery life. Charge Li-ion battery for 5 – 6 hours and Nickel based battery for about 16 hours initially. Avoid the battery full indication.

2. Avoid fully discharging Li batteries. Unlike Nickel based batteries, Li battery should not be fully discharged before it is charged again. Do not wait until you see below 10% to charge back your phone. You can plug it to charge when it is below 25% onwards.

3. Use black based wallpapers and theme. AMOLED screens consume relatively less power when they have to display a black based theme than a bright one.

4. Avoid live wallpapers and videos. And also avoid moving animation or video as your background. A static wallpaper and theme is a good saver.

5. Always turn off vibrate and let your phone ring. Vibration consumes a lot of battery. When you are in a meeting or in between an important discussion it is okay to keep your phone on vibrate. Keeping the phone always on vibrate mode is not good for the battery.

6. Use three step displays. This feature is available through the power saver widget of the android from the home screen. When you are in a closed room or when it is night, try to use the lowest display brightness and efficiently use this property.

7. Turn of the phone while travelling. When you are travelling your phone will keep searching for network constantly. This will consume a lot of power. You can turn off your phone and turn it back on when you are in a stable location.

8. Use wired handsfree to talk. Using headphones to talk is recommended. I always use headphones on long calls not only because my hand will be free of holding the phone but also to save the battery of the phone

9. Avoid using Bluetooth headphones. Again Bluetooth headphones are going to keep searching for signal continuously and then is obviously going to drain the battery.

10. Avoid playing songs on the loudspeaker. Use of headphone will save you a good amount of battery.

11. Turn of wifi, 3G, data when not in use. When you keep your 3G or wi-fi on, it will again continuously establish connection and this will cost you the charge of your battery.

12. Exit apps. Do not keep it minimized.

13. Monitor the performance of the battery. Use battery performance widgets and apps from the app store and keep a note of how long your battery stands and what are the application that your battery uses the power for.

14. Remove unwanted apps and unnecessary features. If you are not going to use a app or if you don’t know what are the uses of some apps, uninstall it.

15. Avoid exposing the phone to direct sun. Battery will be efficient only in room temperature. If you expose the phone to direct sun thereby heating the phone, it will reduce the battery life.

16. When not using the phone, preserve the battery properly. Remove and put the discharged battery in a dry zip lock bar which will prevent from moisture.

17. Charge the phone with proper charger or USB. Do not use incompatible charger to charge the battery. This might affect the phone as well.
